Stis contraception and men with more testosterone

It sounds like another sexual health campaign to boost the number of men wearing condoms however it is now proven that men who have high levels of testosterone will be more inclined to have safe sex. This negates the popular image of men with lots of testosterone who have multiple partners and who are flippant when it comes to safe sex.  The research was carried out at the University of Michigan.

78 year old males who were 18 and 19 years olds were questioned and a sample of their saliva tested. The Michigan researchers suggest that safer sex practices are often viewed negatively. For many the risk of pregnancy or an STI do not factor and rather think that if they were to use an condom that a partner might think them to be untrustworthy.

They explain that men with more testosterone might use condoms more readily so that it makes them seem more knowledgeable about sex. This study was carried out surveying young men who were at the age of 18 or 19, were in their first year of college and the vast majority of the group were heterosexual.

The research also found that those with low levels of testosterone were unlikely to use a condom and especially in situations they find awkward. Presumably, the number of STD tests taken subsequently was not relative. It goes to show that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but maybe we should still use it to increase the number of males wearing condoms? I think this sort of campaign would definitely be successful and definitely increase an awareness of STDs in general, STD testing and safe sex.
